Get a free hearing test from Hidden Hearing
A free hearing test with an appropriately qualified Hearing Care Professional can be broken down into 4 basic parts;
1. Case history
2. Otoscopy
3. Audiometric evaluation
4. Outcome recommendation
In total, the whole process should take no longer than 90 minutes and clients are more than welcome to bring along friends or
family to accompany them and discuss communication requirements.
Case History
A case history is very simply a brief session of question taking before we start the hearing test. This is where we establish whether you believe you have a problem with your hearing, how long you may have had it and explore any possible cause.
At Hidden Hearing we genuinely believe that we can’t get your hearing better until we have listened.
Otoscopy
It will then be necessary to examine your ears to ensure they are not blocked with wax and that there is nothing else present to prevent the hearing test (infections, etc.). From the entrance of the ear canal, you should be able to see all the way down to the eardrum.
This is a non invasive procedure that is over in a matter of seconds - your comfort and safety are assured.
We do this using a piece of equipment called an otoscope. There are two versions; hand held and video. As the name suggests the latter can be viewed by all those present by looking at a TV or computer monitor.
We use both of these at Hidden Hearing and it is likely that we will use video otoscopy when you visit one of our Hearing Care Centres.
We will then take some time to explain to you what has been found. If your ears are excessively blocked with wax then it may be necessary to ask you to speak to your Health Centre/G.P. Clinic to have your ears syringed.
When little or no ear wax is discovered, then we can also comment on the health of the outer ear canal and ear drum.
Audiometric Evaluation
As you will have already seen, our free hearing test will involve a lot more than just testing your hearing. An Audiometric Evaluation can contain various elements including;
- Tuning fork test – used to assist in the determination of the type of hearing loss you may (or may not) have
- Free field warble box – used to indicate the degree and frequency of any possible hearing loss
- Speech test – as the name suggests, a list of words will be read to you to discover a percentage score of how many words you hear
- Puretone audiometry – using supra aural or insert earphones this piece of equipment is used to measure your hearing following procedures laid down by the British Society of Audiologists
Your appropriately qualified Hidden Hearing care professional will decide which of these tests are appropriate, explain the procedure first and then carry out the test.
Once completed we can then explain to you whether you are exhibiting a degree of hearing loss or not. We can also tell you what type of hearing loss you may have and how this relates to any areas of difficulty you may have reported during the case history.
Outcome Recommendation
The recommendation will based on what has been found that day and/or on previous consultations. The recommended course of action could include;
- Amplification – the hearing loss is irreversible and the only way to hear better is by selecting from the comprehensive range of hearing instruments available from Hidden Hearing. To find out more, click here.
- Medical referral – we have discovered a referable condition that requires further attention from your healthcare professional
- Do nothing – you have no perceivable hearing loss or the amplification that you currently use is adequate
This will also be your opportunity to learn more about your hearing, hearing aids and assistive listening devices – whatever you decide to do, we respect that it is your decision.
